Tenterden & District Museum is housed in a two-storey weather-boarded building, one of the last representatives of a type of building common in the area in the latter part of the 19th century.
The Museum was created in 1976, officially opened the following year, and has always been run entirely by volunteers. It is an Arts Council accredited museum and a member of the Wheels of Time initiative.
The museum is one of Tenterden’s most popular attractions, appealing to both locals and tourists. We work closely with Ashford Borough Council’s Culture and Tourism Department and Tenterden Town Council, as well as other heritage attractions in the area, to to celebrate our local history.
The Museum has a small shop selling a range of Tenterden souvenirs as well as locally produced art and craft pieces. It also offers a superb selection of local interest books. Come in and look for unique gifts to remind you of your visit to Tenterden.
We hold regular events and tours throughout the year and have special events for children. We also work closely with our local primary and secondary schools, providing curriculum enrichment and work experience placements.
Everyone on our team is a volunteer and there are lots of different aspects to running the museum, from stewarding and conducting tours to conservation and cleaning tasks. If you think you would like to become involved, please get in touch.
